Curtain goes up for HSNO Act roadshow

ERMA New Zealand has gone on the road with its colleagues in the Department of Labour, the Accident Compensation Corporation and the NZ Chemical Industry Council in a move to improve workplace safety in small and medium sized businesses that use chemicals.

A total of 19 free ‘Learn to Reduce Danger’ workshops are being held over a seven-week period in cities from Whangarei to Invercargill for people running or employed by businesses that use hazardous substances. Approximately 150,000 New Zealand businesses use chemicals in their work.

The goal of the workshops is to make sure employers are aware of their legal obligations to safely manage, store, handle and dispose of chemicals and other hazardous substances, and that employees are aware of safe working practices.

The workshops will cover:

  • What you need to know about hazardous substances in the workplace
  • Meeting workplace health and safety obligations
  • Managing chemicals safely in the workplace
  • HSNO Act compliance tools available
  • Hands-on experience identifying workplace hazards

The workshops will be three hours long with government and industry experts explaining basic workplace health and safety compliance responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on the HSNO Act. They show participants how to meet these responsibilities with a minimum of fuss and expense.

Each workshop includes a challenging practical exercise involving chemical hazards in the workplace.
