The Environmental Risk Management Authority (the Authority) received an application from the equine industry to use a genetically modified (GM) vaccine, to protect New Zealand horses against the equine influenza virus.
Public submissions were sought and a public hearing was held on the 29 September 2008.
In November 2008, ERMA New Zealand approved an application from the New Zealand Racing Board and New Zealand Equine Health Association to conditionally release, with controls, the vaccines Proteqflu and Protecqflu Te in the event of equine influenza being identified in horses in New Zealand.
