Minor amendment to the AgResearch approvals (GMF98009 part I and II)

The Environmental Risk Management Authority (the Authority) has made a minor amendment to the AgResearch field test approvals (GMF98009 Part I and II) granted in November 1999 and May 2001 respectively, that allowed AgResearch to conduct contained field tests involving GM cattle.

The amended versions of the decisions can be found here:

  1. Decision/Control Part 1 [pdf - 190kb]
  2. Decision/Control Part 2 [pdf - 303kb]

The following changes were made to the Part I approval:

  • No new GM cattle can be produced or bred from 18 November 2008.
  • The existing GM animals can be kept in outdoor containment to allow for decisions to be made on new applications from AgResearch.
  • If the new applications are declined, the GM animals must be euthanized within one year.

The following changes were made to the Part I and Part II approvals:

  • If new applications from AgResearch are approved, then the animals that can fit under those approvals can be kept for further research.
  • But those animals that don’t fit any future approvals must be euthanized.

The Authority considers that any change to the overall risk from the above changes is minor in effect.

The Authority notes that it has received applications from AgResearch (GMD07074, GMD08012, GMF07001, GMC07012) to continue this research program into the future. Click here to view applications.
