ERMA New Zealand To Hear Broom Control Application

ERMA New Zealand is to hold a hearing in Christchurch next week into the proposed release of two biological agents to control the widespread weed, Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius).

The hearing follows public submissions on an application by t he Canterbury Broom Group to introduce the Broom Shoot moth ( Agonopterix assimilella ), and Broom Leaf beetle ( Gonioctena olivacea ) into New Zealand.

The insects control broom by feeding on its leaves and green stems, and ring-barking its twigs and branches.

Hearings are required under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, administered by ERMA New Zealand, to hear expressions of support or opposition to the proposed release of new organisms into the country.

ERMA New Zealand New Organisms Group Manager, Libby Harrison, said the hearing would take place from 9am Monday, 3 July, at the Holiday Inn on Avon, 356 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch.

"Information presented at the hearing will be considered by a committee of the Environmental Risk Management Authority, and a decision announced later in the year," Dr Harrison said.
