Be Smart - Stay Safe with Fireworks

Fireworks go on sale to the public on 27 October. The Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA New Zealand) is reminding both retailers and the public of their legal requirements this Guy Fawkes.

Under the Hazardous Substance and New Organisms (HSNO) Act, fireworks can only be sold between 27 October and 5 November 2005.

Retailers must ensure they only sell fireworks which have a Test Certificate confirming that they meet the requirements of the Hazardous Substances (Fireworks) Regulations 2001. Fireworks cannot be sold to anyone under 14 years of age.

Members of the public also have legal responsibilities when it comes to fireworks. Some basic rules when handling fireworks are:

  • Choose a safe place to let off your fireworks, and check there is plenty of open space
  • Store and carry your fireworks carefully and safely. Keep them out of reach of children, and away from heat and flames. Keep them in a closed box and do not carry them in your pockets
  • Children should be supervised by an adult at all times around fireworks
  • Always read and follow the instructions on fireworks
  • Position your fireworks firmly in dirt or sand, or on a level flat surface, then light them at arm's length
  • Keep clear of fireworks which have been lit, but haven't yet gone off
  • Keep animals inside
  • Never throw fireworks
  • Water should be readily available in case of an emergency, and you should have access to a phone.

Most importantly, NEVER use or alter fireworks in any way other than that indicated on the label. Not only is this extremely dangerous, it is against the law and those who do so can be fined up to $500,000.

George Clark, the Acting Chair of ERMA, says €œIt is really important that people observe these basic rules. As we enjoy the festivities, let us keep this fireworks season free from injury to people and damage to property"
