Building Partnerships for Pesticide Risk Reduction

A Symposium for Future Action 24-25 June 2004 Te papa Wellington

23 June 2004

The Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA New Zealand) is hosting a national symposium on Building Partnerships for Pesticide Risk Reduction over the next two days, 24-25 June, at Te Papa in Wellington. The symposium will be opened by the Minister for the Environment the Hon. Marian Hobbs and will be attended by researchers, scientists, producers, growers, regulators, environmentalists and marketers from New Zealand, Australia and the US.

The symposium has been designed to include perspectives from everyone who attends in an attempt to look beyond regulation to the use of innovative partnerships to work toward managing risks from pesticide use in New Zealand.

The keynote speaker from the US is Dr Janet Andersen. Janet is the Director of Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and will be focussing her discussion on the value of voluntary partnerships as an innovative move away from command and control regulation for managing risks to the environment.

Other speakers include Sydney-based Dr Paul Hughes from Dow Agrosciences Australia, from New Zealand Rudd Kleinpaste 'the bugman' and science communicator; and Meriel Watts, Pesticide Action Network Aotearoa; alongside other research and industry specialists.

The two days promise to be a stimulating and innovative beginning to developing working partnerships for pesticide risk management within New Zealand.
