GM seed Non-Compliance a Biosecurity Issue: MAF responds as lead agency

12 May 2004

The Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) is taking the lead role in responding to follow up test results revealing low level GM presence detected in maize seed imported into New Zealand. MAF ordered follow up tests of the corn and maize seed originally tested by US GM testing laboratory Biogenetic Services after that facility had its accreditation suspended through failing to comply with a recent MAF audit.

The issue of accidental importation of GM seeds is primarily a biosecurity breach for which MAF is the lead agency. However the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA New Zealand) also has an interest because of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act requirements and accordingly has been fully involved in discussions with MAF and other agencies about the issue and in determining an immediate response.

As more information comes to light MAF in consultation with ERMA New Zealand and other agencies will determine the most appropriate longer term action.
