ERMA New Zealand's National Roadshow

31 October 2003

ERMA New Zealand is undertaking a national roadshow during the month of November to offer the opportunity for all stakeholders with an interest in new organisms, including genetically modified organisms, to meet with ERMA New Zealand staff, Authority members and Nga Kaihautu to discuss the implications of the HSNO Amendment Act 2003 and the practical implications of the lifting of the moratorium on GMO releases.

We are expecting scientists, researchers, industry groups, community and environmental groups, beekeepers, organic farmers, enforcement agencies, and other government agencies from around the country to participate in this roadshow.

Technical and legislative issues will be discussed on the first part of day one followed by the opportunity for members of the public to participate in informal discussions about ERMA New Zealand's role, meet members of the decision making body, the Authority, and find out about decision making and risk management.

Key note speakers introducing the public sessions are:

Hamilton Hamilton Quality Hotel - 5pm Dr Judy Motion, Professor of Communications.
Auckland Auckland Centra - 5pm Dr Jim Watson, CEO, Genesis Research.
Palmerston North Palmerston North Quality Hotel - 5pm Professor Barry Scott, Director, Centre for Functional Genomics.
Wellington Wellington Convention Centre - 5pm Dr Morgan Williams, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.
Christchurch Christchurch Holiday Inn - 5pm Paul Tocker, CEO, Crop and Food Research Ltd.
Dunedin The venue for the Dunedin Roadshow has changed. We will now be using The Dunedin Centre which is 1 Harrop Street, Dunedin, next to the Cathedral on the Octagon. This venue is approx 100 yards from the original venue.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. - 5pm
Emeritus Professor George Petersen, Biochemistry, Otago University.

Members of the public are invited along to view the ERMA New Zealand Gallery (open from 3.30pm) which will consist of visual displays about ERMA New Zealand and its role as decision maker, and the interactive nature and roles of other government agencies.

Day two of the roadshow is a workshop opportunity for delegated decision makers and an opportunity for these scientists and researchers to meet with representatives from local iwi and members of Ngā Kaihautū. (These sessions are designed for Institutional Biological Safety Committee (IBSC) members and applicants only).
