Government Announcement of Changes to GMO Legislation

February 13, 2003

The Authority welcomes the release of the Government's decisions on proposed amendments to the HSNO Act, to be put into place as a part of lifting the moratorium on releases. The package is consistent with the recommendations of the Royal Commission. The actual provisions written into law will be the basis for decision-making by the Authority.

At this stage it is inappropriate for the Authority to comment on the implications of the proposals, which will need to be carefully analysed and worked through. It will also be necessary to wait until legislation is introduced to Parliament and eventually passed.

The Authority is conscious of the need to be ready for implementation by 30 October 2003 and is confident of reaching that target.

Issued jointly by: Neil Walter, Chairperson of the Authority Bas Walker, Chief Executive of the Authority (ERMA New Zealand)
