The Environmental Risk Management Authority has approved an application from Landcare Research Ltd to import genetically modified carrots and potatoes for use in possum management.
The carrots and potatoes, which will be kept in strict containment, have been modified to express possum contraceptive antigens.
The aim of the research is to see if possums show an immune response on feeding, which is sufficient to affect their fertility.
