In 1995 Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand published a risk management standard, AS/NZS 4360. This was subsequently revised and republished in 1999. In addition to the generic standard, a number of handbooks providing specific guidance have been prepared. The most recent of these guides is Environmental Risk Management: Principles and Process (AS HB 203:2000).
The purpose of the guide is to help individuals and organisations to understand environmental risk management, and to implement environmental risk management programs based on the generic process set out in the joint standard.
The guide can be used
- to inform management and staff about environmental risk management,
- as a framework for strategic planning and decision making,
- to help implement environmental risk management at operational and strategic levels,
- as a tool within an organisation's environmental management system, and
- to provide guidance for drafting briefs.
While the guide will provide a useful resource for all environmental managers, the primary audience is young or inexperienced environmental managers, non-environmental specialist professionals who are required to manage environmental issues, but who have little or no environmental training, and the general public.
