Arrangements have been clarified for the participation of the Environmental Risk Management Authority and its Maori Advisory Committee Nga Kaihautu Tikanga Taiao, in the GM Cattle Appeal.
Two weeks ago an appeal was lodged in the High Court against the Authority's decision to grant the Crown Research Institute, AgResearch permission to carry out field trials on genetically modified cattle. The Authority was automatically a party to this appeal. Subsequently a number of other groups asked to be heard by the Court in respect of the appeal.
It is important to both the Authority and Nga Kaihautu that every assistance is able to be given to the Court in providing information and background on the decision and on the advice given. Because of uncertainty about the status of Nga Kaitahtu in this regard, they initially gave notice of a wish to be heard.
The Chief Executive of ERMA New Zealand Dr Bas Walker says it has now been established that if the High Court wishes to seek clarification of the issues of concern to Nga Kaihautu, this can be done through their formal association with the Authority. Consequently Nga Kaihautu have withdrawn their separate request to be heard.
