Media advisory: progress on GM cattle application

April 2, 2000

Last year, the Authority considered an application from Ag Research to field test GM cattle at Ruakura. The Authority approved genetic modifications to increase casein and reduce lactose in the composition of cows' milk. The third modification proposed was to insert a synthetic human gene into cows' milk, to see if a biopharmaceutical product could be developed for the possible treatment of multiple sclerosis.

The Authority deferred its decision on the human gene proposal while further information was sought from the applicant and local Maori. The parties were asked to consider how the effects of the proposal, including spiritual and health effects, could be ameliorated. At this stage, progress reports have been sent to the Authority from the parties concerned. A hui has been hosted by Ag Research and meetings have been held within the local Maori community.

The next step will be a hui hosted by Ngati Wairere. The Authority has adjourned its consideration of the application to allow time for the hui to take place. The responses are now expected in mid-may

Detailed information on the proposal will be available soon.
