Application to field test GM sheep

December 8, 1999

The Authority has received an application from Ag Research to field test a genetically modified sheep.

The purpose of the application is develop sheep with enhanced muscle growth, after 'knocking out' a protein gene found in the cells of conventional sheep.

An inactive form of the mysostatin protein has been found to enhance muscle growth in another species - the Belgian Blue cattle. The aim of this research is to see if the same effect can be produced in sheep. A part of the genetic sequence of the sheep will be 'knocked out' to achieve this result. There is no other genetic material being introduced, apart from an antibiotic resistant marker gene. (Marker genes are routinely used in genetic research to identify which cells have been modified and which have not).

The application is to field test the GM sheep in containment in Ag Research facilities at Ruakura.

There is no intention of allowing any products from this field test into the food chain.

The application was publicly notified by the Authority today. Submissions close on 16 February 1999.

A copy of the executive summary, prepared by the applicant, is attached. Further information can be found on the ERMA New Zealand website at www.ermanz.govt.nz. Go to Applications - applications register - enter code GMF99004 - submit search.
