Ag Research Application Hearing

August 27, 1999

The Authority held a public hearing on 25 August on the Ag Research application for GM cattle. The hearing attracted a lot of interest and lasted until after 7pm. The applicants presented their proposal and there were also presentations from Ngati Wairere (the local hapu), and eleven submitters.

The hearing was adjourned. The committee is now in a process of consideration, during which it will weigh up all the information. The process is likely to take several weeks, if not longer. A final decision will not be made until the committee has finished its consideration. The Act requires a decision to be issued within fifteen days from then.

The decision will be made in accordance with the HSNO Act (Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act) and the Methodology. It will be publicly notified and loaded on the website.
