Veterinary medicines have been transferred to the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996.
Information on classification and controls of veterinary medicines
The following types of veterinary medicines were transferred under individually substance descriptions
- Parasiticides
- Other 'large volume' products, such as bloat remedies and antimicrobials
- Small volume finished dose products, including
- Analgesics, anesthetics, euthanasia agents and sedatives
- Antidotes and anti-inflammatory agents
- Antibiotics
- Endocrine agents and steroids
- Hormones
- Vaccines
- Products intended for companion animals, including skin and coat conditioners.

Animal nutritional and animal care products have been transferred under the Animal Nutrition and Animal Care Products) Group Standard.
Complying with HSNO
If you are involved in importing, manufacturing, selling, storing, using or disposing of veterinary medicines, then it is possible that you may need to change the way you have done things in the past. For example, changes may be needed to the type of information provided to users and you may need to become an approved handler.
