Hazardous substances notified to ERMA New Zealand by 2 July 2001 have all been transferred from older legislation to the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Regime.
What was transfer?
Under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act every hazardous substance imported or manufactured in New Zealand requires an approval from the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA New Zealand).
The hazardous substance provisions of the Act came into force on 2 July 2001, and included provisions for existing substances, i.e. those present in New Zealand at that time, to be transferred to the HSNO regime. Between 2003 and 2006 ERMA New Zealand transferred the following substance types to the HSNO regime.
- Explosives
- Dangerous goods and scheduled toxic substances
- Pesticides (including timber treatments, antisapstains, antifouling paints, vertebrate toxic agents and fumigants)
- Veterinary medicines
- Notified Toxic Substances (including single components)
