The Environmental Risk Management Authority has issued a group standard for fire fighting chemicals.
This group standard is issued in accordance with the requirements of Part 6A of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996. The group standard came into force on 1 July 2006.
The Fire Fighting Chemicals Group Standard has been created for chemicals used to prevent, suppress or extinguish a fire, including any suppressant that reduces the surface tension of water and/or produces a foam which is applied directly on to the flame of a fire to extinguish the fire. It also includes fire retardants that are mixed with water and applied to un-burnt vegetation so that combustion is not supported.
