Group Standard for Denatured Ethanol

The Environmental Risk Management Authority has issued a group standard for denatured ethanol.

This group standard was issued in accordance with the requirements of Part 6A of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996. The group standard came into force on 1 July 2006.

The Denatured Ethanol Group Standard covers solutions of more than 90% ethanol that has been denatured to render it unsuitable for human consumption, and includes methylated spirits.

Amendments

This group standard was first amended on 24 May 2007, such that formulations of denatured ethanol sold to the general public are not permitted to be denatured with methanol (and thus enact the outcome of the methylated spirits reassessment). This Group Standard was then further amended on 21 June 2007 to permit an additional formulation of denatured ethanol to be sold both to industrial users and the general public, namely ethanol denatured with 0.25% tertiary butyl alcohol together with 10ppm denatonium benzoate.
