Becoming a Test Certifier

ERMA New Zealand is the regulatory authority for the introduction, use or manufacture of hazardous substances or new organisms. Explosives, some Dangerous Goods (including petrol) and Scheduled Toxic Substances and Agrichemicals have been transferred to the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) regime.

Vertebrate toxic agents (such as 1080), fumigants, veterinary medicines and notified toxic substances will be transferred before June 2006.

As hazardous substances are transferred they may require a test certificate for the location, equipment and staff. The test certificate will be issued by a Test Certifier authorised by ERMA New Zealand. The Test Certifier is an individual and may be self employed or an employee of an organisation.

ERMA New Zealand seeks expressions of interest from individuals with the appropriate qualifications to become Test Certifiers. Test Certifiers are needed throughout the country. Organisations wishing to employ Test Certifiers are also encouraged to respond.

A Test Certifier may seek authorisation appropriate to their experience and competence. A range of background skills is being sought that will need to include knowledge of the HSNO Act and regulations, as well as practical experience with hazardous substances, equipment and systems. Recent experience in similar work is clearly a benefit.

If you have an interest, contact ERMA New Zealand. We will send you the 'Background Information and Application Pack' that includes the potential scope of the test certification business.
