Codes of Practice

Index

Codes of Practice are documents that offer an approved method of achieving compliance with regulatory requirements set under HSNO. Together with best practice, they are intended to eliminate or minimise the risk associated with the management of hazardous substances. The HSNO Act provides for Codes of Practice to be approved by ERMA New Zealand.

Codes of Practice may be developed by ERMA New Zealand or by other organisations and then presented to ERMA New Zealand for approval. Once the Code of Practice is examined and approved by The Authority, it will be notified in The Parliamentary Gazette, through this website and in The Bulletin.

ERMA New Zealand will provide a brief Information Sheet as a summary of the key points within each Code of Practice as it is approved.

Consultation on Codes of Practice under preparation will generally be conducted by the organisation responsible for the development of the code. Notice of any consultation and a link if necessary to any external organisation involved will be posted on this website.

More information on the development and approval of HSNO Codes of Practice is available: Development and approval of HSNO Codes of Practice [pdf - 601 kb]

A list of codes with which ERMA New Zealand is currently involved is given below. A number of further Codes of Practice may also be under development by various industry organisations

Approved Practice Guidestop of page

Approved Practice Guides APG are an alternative to a full Code of Practice CoP. They still provide a means of compliance with controls under HSNO but do not provide a defence in law as does a CoP. Therefore, the requirements to obtain approval are less rigorous than for a CoP, primarily in the amount of consultation required.

However, they must still be technically correct and relate to specific controls.

They will be approved by the Authority but are not notified in the Gazette.

APGs that ERMA New Zealand is currently involved with are shown below Lists accurate August 2006.
