Do I need to make an application?

Before making an application to ERMA New Zealand to import or manufacture a hazardous substance you should check to see if an application for approval is required. An approval is NOT required if

  • the substance is is covered by an existing approval; or
  • the substance is non-hazardous.

You can check whether your substance is covered by an existing approval in New Zealand or is hazardous by following the guidelines below.

Alternatively you can ask ERMA New Zealand for informal advice as to the status of your substance.

Determining whether a substance is hazardous

You can determine yourself whether a substance is hazardous. The Thresholds and Classifications (summary user guide) [pdf - 472kb], gives a summary of how to decide whether or not a substance is hazardous. Accompanying this guide is a substance evaluation sheet which is designed to guide you simply through the process of assessing whether an application is needed.
