ERMA New Zealand seeks to clarify the information required to assess the safety of new pesticides (other than biopesticides) to beneficial invertebrates. ERMA New Zealand accepts that large scale trials are not always appropriate to generate information on the selectivity of beneficial arthropods.
Accordingly, ERMA New Zealand has reviewed the tiered approach adopted in the European Union EPPO Standard Chapter 9 Non-target terrestrial arthropods and prepared draft data requirements for New Zealand approvals.
ERMA New Zealand’s draft data requirements for evaluating the effects of chemical pesticides on bees and beneficial invertebrates are described in a discussion paper. These data requirements will apply at the time approval is sought for full release of a pesticide.
This discussion paper will be available for public comment from 24 November 2009 to 26 February 2010.
