About ERMA New Zealand

ERMA New Zealand is made up of:

  • the Authority - a quasi-judicial body,
  • Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao - a committee to advise the Authority on Māori issues,
  • the Agency - the support organisation.

Three entities that make ERMA New Zealand

The Environmental Risk Management Authority (the Authority)

  • is an autonomous Crown entity
  • is a quasi-judicial, decision-making body
  • has up to eight members appointed by the Minister for the Environment
  • was established under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996
  • is the governing board of ERMA New Zealand

Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao (Ngā Kaihautū)

  • is a statutory committee
  • advises the Authority on taking account of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and Māori perspectives
  • may have up to seven members, selected for their background expertise
  • does not represent individual iwi or hapu but provides independent advise of a generic nature on issues of relevance to Māori under the HSNO Act

The Agency

  • was established to carry out operations in support of or on behalf of the Authority
  • is made up of five groups: New Organisms; Hazardous Substances; Strategy and Analysis; Corporate Services and Māori.
